I know I should ignore this but I couldn't stop myself. Sorry in advance.
Oh, well, then you'll be happy to know that Global Warming was discovered on another planet first, Venus. The first successful probe to measure the Venusian atmosphere was Russian Venera 4.
The descent capsule of Venera 4 entered the atmosphere of Venus on October 18, 1967, making it the first probe to return direct measurements from another planet's atmosphere. The capsule measured temperature, pressure, density and performed 11 automatic chemical experiments to analyze the atmosphere. It discovered that the atmosphere of Venus was 95% carbon dioxide (CO2), and in combination with radio occultation data from the Mariner 5 probe, showed that surface pressures were far greater than expected (75 to 100 atmospheres).
In the '60's and '70's measurements of temperatures shocked scientists and the discovery of the effect and coining of "Greenhouse Gases" was based on research of Venus. In fact the idea was further expended to the concept of Runaway Greenhouse Effect is based on Venus and many parts of climate change research is based on comparisons to Earth and Venus. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runaway_greenhouse_effect
So yeah, astronomy has many direct benefits and you picked a perfect example.
This is utter bullsh*t. If you search the ADS database for papers published in physics and astronomy over 45,000 show up all based on data from instrumentation used on Maunakea. Kepler can not do the same things that can be done on Maunakea, same for Hubble which is at the end of its life. You seem to think every thing pointed at the sky is the same; they aren't. Take an astronomy class and learn the difference before you spout on about it. https://www.coursera.org/learn/astro
Also I know for a fact that almost half (42%) of the Subaru's full time employees are Hawaiians. But hey, let's just build another costco and buy more junk because that'd be a much better use of Aina, job creation and use of electricity.

Oh, if a telescope could have let us detect global warming 50 years ago and if we had the will to act, perhaps we could have saved ourselves from ourselves.

They are scanning thousands of stars and galaxies now, essentially setting a flag when an object of interest shows up. Then observatories all over the planet decide which objects they will investigate with longer observation. There are a lot of jobs involved but very few on this island, probably a few hundred up around Waimea, a couple hundred around UHH, who knows how many thousands visiting and working.
