Lava flow approching Emergency Road and Ocean
#34
Last night an ambulance and a couple police were again called down to the Kalapana lava viewing parking lot area, not sure why?
The actual time it takes to walk from the parking lot area to the lava flow is roughly 2 hours while the walking distance is about 5 miles each way. The dust from the 10-mile long gravel road hike makes breathing very difficult at times as does the heat if you choose to start your hike in the afternoon.
Maybe an optional county van shuttle service should seriously be considered before several of our tourists experience heart attacks, breathing problems, dehydration symptoms or god forbid lose a child?

The coconuts being sold by local residents along the hike were absolutely heaven sent at $5.00 apiece. Police were writing $35 parking tickets last night for those who ventured further in with their vehicle after midnight. Pele entering the ocean coupled with a 6-mile shorter hike after midnight may be worth the price of 7 coconuts. jmo.
