teachers union wants more/higher taxes
#34
Give it to them. They are cultivating our most important asset under circumstances that are about to get even more difficult. My dad dug ditches and then farmed. I went to public school when such schools were widely and enthusiastically supported. I have done better economically than my parents. That's what they wanted. That's what society wanted. That was our expected national trajectory then and it was possible for me because I had teachers that took a genuine interest in my education. No one paid for pens and pencils and paper and basic supplies. They were given to you, which is good, because we couldn't afford it. I don't remember ever having to buy a thing for school other than peechee folders and --major expense-- a sweater vest for glee club.

The state provided everything I can remember so that the playing field was as even as possible.

Teachers were not snarled at as greedy pigs at the public trough. They were in a highly regarded and respected profession.

I'm not a historian, but it seems to be that Hawaii's school system had an agricultural, and not an academic, bent. Now the state is moving in other directions and the schools are catching up.

Supporting our public schools, to level the playing field nationally is important. I am not the only one from my generation that did better economically than my parents. That is because our parents lifted us up, by providing us with a quality public education, even when it required some sacrifice. I'd like to thank that generation and ask them to come back from the Great Beyond long enough to whap this generation upside the head.
