I have a Magic Chef mini ("dorm") fridge from Walmart and a (small, 5 cu ft) GE chest freezer from Home Depot. Price around $200.
Many years of service, even with modified sine AC from a cheap inverter.
The DC fridges sold at "off grid" stores are supposedly higher build quality, with thicker insulation, and much more efficient; some (most? all?) of them can be wired directly to a solar panel without batteries or charge controller. They're much more expensive (around $1500), but the simplicity can be worth it in some cases.
