Just to repeat... Hilo and Pahoa DO NOT accept microwaves for recycle. After searching through the Hawaii County website with no luck, I emailed them. Here is the response I received:

Since nobody wants to recycle microwaves you may place it with your regular rubbish for disposal.

It's funny to hear about how important recycling is, and how bad it is for appliances and e-waste to go into our regular landfill, then to get such an official response. "Malama the Aina" - sure! It's one of those "blame the other folks" kinds of things on the County side. I feel for the the people that have to work there and know how backwards and inefficient we are here on this Island.
Oh well... if you see me tipping a big microwave in the rubbish bin at Pahoa, come give me a big hug and we can talk about how we are all poisoning the Earth together.
