careful using sg as a fence. they tend to re-root if any part is touching the soil. unless you want a living fence which could be nice also.
cardboard works as well for a weed barrier so you dont have to buy weed mat you could just get free cardboard from any large store
i tend to layer my ground covers for extra weed blocking potential. and using shade to prevent weeds as well. i grow perennial peanut (perennial peanut isnt as weed free as you hope) and sweet potato together usually, but the pigs love sweet potatos so if you do this make sure the area is fenced in. sisso spinach is a great carefree ground cover. i also grow lablab as a ground cover, but you will need a little bit of maintenence so it doesnt climb all over your young trees
papaya, moringa, cassava, edible hibiscus, sisso spinach and kalo are all carefree easy plants to grow and forget about
these are all food plants with multiple purposes, great permaculture plants
