The running joke is the "medical" need for marijuana.
But I think what he was referring to, is that seemingly the vocal majority in the legalization of marijuana discussions for medical use are people who appear to have no interest in the medical perspective of it all. Something I personally find insulting, and quite detrimental to the cause at hand. One only needs to look at the thread by glassnumbers that got locked about a month ago to get a glimpse into what I mean.

...I am curious, what do you think of "legal" pharmaceuticals such as opiate derivatives? What do you think of alcohol? In those cases they are legal and yet much more destructive when used for medical or recreational purposes than pot is. Do they, in your opinion, have a real purpose or are they a joke too?
Never the less, I personally believe any measurable destructiveness of the above mentioned comes from their recreational use rather than their medicinal... wouldn't you agree? And in that, I don't think we can yet compare the destructiveness of alcohol to marijuana until both are legal, at which point then they are on level grounds for comparison.
