Hey Mella,
I read "Life of Pi" during silent reading time with my 8th graders last year, had a great book discussion with a couple of the kids who had also read it. Later sent it to my oldest daughter in FL and we recently had a talk about what really happened to Pi.
Now I'm wrapping up "Reading Lolita in Tehran" amazing book written by a English professor leading a clandestine book group in Iran.
Book for the plane: Isabelle Allende's young adult book "City of the Beasts" maybe I can share it with my Puna 8th graders.
