We could outlaw semi automatic firearms with replaceable magazines. Outlaw any semi automatic firearm that has a magazine holding over x number of rounds.
If we are going to worry about bolt action, lever action and pump action rifles, then it's time to admit we really want to ban ALL firearms. In that case, I'm out, and the NRA is right about the slippery slope theory, and we will get nothing done.
Semi automatic rifles with replaceable magazines are the tool of choice for mass murderers. They can buy after market magazines with the capacity to hold huge numbers of rounds, and buy many of those, load them, and carry them when they do their mission.
Look at this page and scroll down and you'll see a 90 round magazine for an AR-15.Throw six or eight of those in a carry bag and imagine the damage that could ensue.

If it were up to me, I'd make a ban on semi automatic "centerfire" rifles with detachable magazines. This would exempt .22 rimfire rifles, like the Ruger 10/22, and I doubt anyone can come up with an instance where one of those was used in a mass shooting.
I would make sure semi automatic handguns with replaceable magazines had a limit on the capacity of the magazines.
Would banning these firearms stop ALL mass shootings? Nope. But, it would take their weapons of choice away from the mix.
Some creative anti gunners have suggested, maybe we should outlaw firearm ammunition. Take a path like that and you will lose folks like me. I've fired many thousands of rounds in target shooting, competing, and practicing over 50 years, and never used a firearm in commission of a crime.
