Plenty of countries had armed rebellions, and only in one case did it lead to the unbelievable ease with which a nut could machine gun a class of six year olds. Some people want to put a stop to this, others are fine with it - until it happens to them, I can only assume.
One train of thought seems to be that guns are needed to stop a theoretical tyrannical government, hence the need for more and more firepower.
A bizarre fantasy. I think history has shown that a bunch of civilians will never beat any actual army. I can't think of a single counter example.
