I've spent quite a bit of time in Switzerland, and it is a beautiful, safe country. Compulsory military service for all men ages 18-34 includes many, but not all, keeping their service rifles at home. Once service is completed, some buy their military rifles and continue to keep them at home. Nearly all guns have to be registered, and purchasing a gun or ammunition requires a permit with strict conditions. Those regulations are surprisingly similar to Hawaii's.
As for World War II, a Swiss friend told me, "Yes, we were well defended, but ultimately Hitler did not invade because we were worth more to the Germans as a 'window' to the rest of the world than we would have been worth as a conquest." Most historians agree.
