The Nominating Committee requested the League of Women Voters to do the ballot counting. Interestingly, at that point the board pres turned to Dist6 Murdoch and started to relay his personal bad experience w/LOWV...which made evident why HPP hasn't hired the LOWV while Crelly's been on the board during his 3 yr term. It sure appeared that he was trying to influence the decision to not use them. Someone from the peanut gallery blurted out that his comment was inappropriate, to which a 2nd member in the peanut gallery concurred. Dist6 Murdoch was charged w/contacting the LOWV to get pricing and availability. The board approved up to $1000 expenditure. Now, since Crelly's back on the board filling a vacancy for Dist3, we'll see what happens this year.
Also recommended by the NC was to have the ballots inserted into envelopes this year. Again, while C Crelly and R Mizuba have been on the board, they have used the tri-fold method and scotch tape to seal, and of course Dist2 R Mizuba suggested we go that way again. The NC replied that there have been issues in the past using this system. Many members weren't getting their ballots. P Murdoch said it had to do with bad addresses... which is an inaccurate broad stroke reply. Even running candidates in past elections didn't get ballots...everyone knew at least a few people who didn't get their ballots, and multiply that number.... It's flimsy and can easily get damaged in transport or be misidentified as a marketing mailer. Let's hope they use their common sense this year and make the right decision. If they don't have the money, which is crazy to even suggest this, they can always use R Mizuba's $100,000 mailbox project monies.
8Fingers, YES it most definitely is a conflict of interest. This is why our bylaws give the directives to the Nominating Committee, a Membership committee NOT board committee, to qualify candidates. District elections are membership business and the board and office employees are not to undermine this event by interfering, obstructing, meddling....
