So bottom line with no insurance this little 45 minute visit for my partner would have been $887.78, for me $721.52.

Not going to defend them, but that isn't how it generalluy works if you have no insurance. The bill would generally be much less than that as they discount it for not having to file all the claims and wait for payment.
