My Dad was from long ago... but certainly can't argue that the idea was original to him. And can't disagree with Hunter S., but have to cite one of my favorites, HL Mencken: "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."

He had another one that I only just came across: "On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

I think that day has arrived....
