quote:
One of my highschool students there introduced me to wonderful book that I can't quite call the name of The Dove, I think. True story about a teen who sails the South Pacific with only his cat for company.
"Dove" was indeed the title and the author is Robin Graham. He didn't just sail the South Pacific though. In 1970 he completed a solo voyage that circumnavigated the earth that he'd begun 5 years earlier at the age of 16.
AFAIK, he remains the youngest person ever to have achieved this feat of single-handed seamanship. He was inspired to undertake this effort after reading a book that is also one of my favorite adventure tales "Sailing Alone Around the World" by Capt. Joshua Slocum, the first - and for over 60 years - the oldest person to do so.
aloha,
Gene
