In AK the primary election used to be completely open.
Then, the Republicans began insisting that primary voting be closed by party lines.
Their reasoning was that people affiliated with other parties, Democrats and Alaska Independents especially, could influence the Republican candidate outcome by crossing party lines nullifying stronger candidates.
My feeling is that the Democrats made the same thing happen here for the same reasons.
As usual, party politics are more important than the good of the people.
