Records for Hawaii are very slim prior to 60 years ago... & most likely there WAS a hurricane in the 1871 that hit Hawaii Island, based on the documented (Hawaiian language newspaper accounts) evidence... AND the 1800`s there were also reports (only 2nd-3rd hand) of an earlier 1800`s hit in Kau...
& older olelo tell of fierce battles between wind & sea, which could indicate very severe storms had been present in pre-recorded history...
