Man drowns at Kehena Beach
#4
Gotta use your common sense regarding swimming at Kehena. I've been swimming there for years and can go out when it's high surf but I know that water and the shore break quite well. Even though I surfed on the mainland prior to moving here it took me a couple of months before I entered Kehena to swim, I studied it. First only going out when it's calm and gradually worked up to rough surf. I tell tourist and locals to only go out when it's calm and wear lightweight fins. If surf kicks up while you are out there stay outside the break line, stay calm, relax and breath as you watch the waves until you recognize a set. Then exit betwn sets.
