Devils advocate here. I read that Easter Islanders had it hard because they had no reefs. Easter Island is far enough from the equator that the water is pretty cold and coral doesn't like it. Are there signs of coral colonizing new areas as they warm up?
Not that I think it is a good trade. It isn't. However it would fit with the whole narrative.
