The "big four" auto manufacturing had their hand in it as well. Shortly after WWII they started buying all the commuter railways and promoting the "freedom of your own transportation, where you decide when and where you could go" with the automobile.
There are many areas that people now wish there was a commuter train line to ease the congestion of bumper to bumper traffic to get to work with the added time and expense.
Imagine a solar powered train line similar to the BART system on the mainland that ran 20 minutes apart continuously around the island with stops in every town and populated area without the graft and corruption of HART at a price cheaper than gas and tires?
