PaulW - opening my eyes to another reason why people spread kooky lies - greed. Now it makes sense.
That's just my hypothesis for why islandlvng is pushing the bioweapon theory so hard (despite the unreliability of his sources and evidence - CNBC quoting possible conspiracy theories is neither
a credible source nor evidence). Profit seemed a possible rational motive.
However, the belief may be irrational as well, part of they doomsday fetishization that's prevalent on twitter, reddit, and here to some degree as well. Only islandlvng can actually explain why all the signs appear so dire to them, but it appears to be a willing suspension of disbelief to me.
Interestingly, the return of the Black Plague to England in 1665 was seen by many to be a sign of the end times, part of mysterious and large forces at work, evidenced again by the Great Fire of London in 1666 (note the numerology). I'd expect our responses to such disasters would have evolved since then, but it seems nearly 360 years later, we've really just come full circle.
