The adult male traveler visited Maui from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3 and then Oahu from Feb. 3 to Feb. 7. While on Oahu, staying at the Grand Waikikian, he was exhibiting “cold-like” symptoms, health officials said.
When he returned to Japan, he was diagnosed with the virus.
Health Director Bruce Anderson said it’s likely that the patient was likely exposed before he traveled to Hawaii or in transit to the state.
The Mainichi newspaper reports the man is in his 60s, and had not recently visited China. He lives in Nagoya, Aichi prefecture. (emphasis mine)
