geochem - He states pretty clearly that the public don't need medical grade masks
As discussed before, the public not needing medical grade masks is one thing - trying to gaslight everyone into believing they don't work is something else. There is an ongoing attempt at disinformation using the term masks and listing their limitations when talking about people who are in fact wearing N95+ respirators.

Don't try to psy op-the public if you want them to believe your public health proclamations.
Some of us still have our N95s that were handed out like candy during the 2018 lava flow, and are cleaning and recycling them as needed. So if we're all contributing to the shortage of medical masks, it was years in the making and perpetrated largely by the local and federal government.
As terracore noted, the fact that front line health care workers here aren't even being allowed to use masks points to much larger problems than some of us reusing supplies to we already had on hand to help reduce the contraction and transmission of the virus.
ETA: Some of us actually have proper PPE training as part of our background. No not everyone, but to each their own. You may be surprised at the resumes for many of the Punatics running around - I know I constantly am!
