You are 100% correct - I think many people miss the point with face masks (in many ways) - one function is to intercept droplets, but a far more important one is to keep you from touching your face with your infectious hands... If the mask is only 50% effective at intercepting droplets and 100% effective at keeping your hands off your nose, mouth and eyes, then it may be 99% effective at avoiding infection.
