Thanks for your heartfelt and still humorous apology. I wasn't there, but my friend from Nanawale was, and I heard about it before reading your post ( dare I say via the 'coconut wireless' ? )
An only-in-Puna tip: having found several old nests from my feral chickens, I've found the best way to transport them to the transfer station is to first place them in a plastic bag/container, and put them in the freezer until you make your trash run. It seems from your story that you only found them too late for this tip to be of use, but maybe for next time.
