I have seen that suggestion on some bicyclist forums, and I think it's a good one.

Actually, I am considering an electric bike. But, most are are heavy as heck.50-85 pounds. Meaning, riding with the electrics turned off can be extremely difficult, even on level ground. I like the Ride1up V2 Roadsters model. About 33 pounds with pedal assist only.  Single speed flat bar road bike like my regular bike. It is said, because of the low weight, it isn't hard to ride it with no electrics. I would do that and save the electrics for steeper hills and getting away from attacking dogs.
But, I am enjoying  riding my regular bike.  Riding from my home on 23rd near Kaloli to the long house gives me a workout and takes about 38-40 minutes with a couplé short breaks. Remember, it's a single speed bike. The ride home, however, is like a theme park ride, being chock full of downhill. That ride takes like 17 minutes and no stops needed. The ride home from Pahoa is  quite easy also.

If enough of us carry dog-tasers, owners of viscous dogs will be more careful about containing their critters.
When I walked my two small dogs, and saw large unleashed dogs and asked the owners to put them on a leash they ignored me.  When I started carrying a golf putter, they called their dogs and restrained them until the crazy golf club man passed by.

Whatever works.

I actually walk with a cane due to my right knee, so I pack that dog beating stick with me on my daily walk. I have a number of dog related incidents in the ten years I've lived here. I also am not one bit shy about calling the popo, and/or the Humane Society (when they exist) about loose attacking dogs.
