Hi Carey,
I don't think they are Hawaiians cause I really don't think "any" Hawaiians would do that unless they were totally stupid. My great grandfather once took some non hawaiians into a cave and him being non hawaiian explained to them not to touch "anything". Well, when they turned to find the door to the cave, they couldn't find it so he sat there and said, "ok, either we are going to sit here and die or you are going to empty your pockets". They stole some small pendants and as soon as their pockets were emptied, the mouth of the cave appeared. I really don't know why he took them in the cave but I guess we all have our lessons to learn. Hopefully others will learn from this. I can't trace their DNA through the newspaper article but my husband met one of the guys (Taylor) one time before the whole thing happened. He said he was not Hawaiian. Racist? I don't see any racist posts. I see alot of education going on and if I seem rough sometimes I really don't care. I will live and die defending and educating about my culture. The only way to get non hawaiians to see it from our point, is to educate. If they choose to read it and understand it for what it is, then that is all I care about.
Yes, there is tension in Kamehameha Schools sometimes and myself not being a product of Kamehameha schools had to grow up with people of all cultures and I have very good friends (lots of them) who are not Hawaiian and we respect each other greatly. but like we concluded on another thread, there is good and bad in all races. Sometimes we have to duke it out before we come to understanding. Once that happens, it makes it all worth it.
I think if the forum is onesided (which it seems me and Maka are the only Hawaiians here who will even speak up) then it is what it is. Take it or leave it but it is how it is in Hawaii. We have lots of Hawaiians who speak up in Hawaii that get misenterpreted as being racist. Especially the ones who would like to take away what little rights as Hawaiians that we do have so if they interpret it that way, they are the racist. The few people who I have come into contact with through emails think I should keep on striving for education and that is what I will do and "no one" especially a non hawaiian can tell me they know more about my culture or can tell me what to say or not. Those days are gone... Thanks for the comments though. I'm glad you mentioned racism so I can clarify things from my point of view.
