From what I understand, Pu'u O'o has nearly shut down. The new area of activity, which flowed for less than a day, is located further west-southwest of Pu'u O'o. If that became active and started to pour out lava, wouldn't it have to go uphill or level to affect Fern Acres? I can't find a map with contours to compare elevations.
I was just at the Park VC and the Crater Rim Road has reopened (SO2 levels must have dropped sufficiently) but the Chain of Craters Road is still closed. There's a neat graphic posted at the VC that shows what they imagine is going on underground. The graphic is here:

Oops, now that I read the text and callouts, that's from episode 54. Still, it kind of provides a picture of what might be going on underneath.
