I understand the concern about buying secondhand furniture here, but have had excellent experience buying a futon from someone on the Kona side. It and the solid wooden frame are in fabulous condition and it was a great deal at $100.
Also bought a used queen mattress from Smith's in Hilo -- they sell used hotel furniture and while you have to check their stuff carefully, they do have some good stuff and the mattress was clean, no mold or dirt for $150. Several friends have bought mattresses there too with good results. Also bought 2 glass topped round rattan tables from them for 10 each!
Some people at garage sales sell stuff for way too much here -- we were spoiled with garage sales in Sonoma County!
We're getting ready to ship stuff over -- but boxes of stuff only -- no furniture and we are slowly adding furniture as we find what we like. We love the bamboo and teak furniture from store of the same name in Hilo (and Kona) which is good quality and value.
It's all a personal decision, of course -- this is our version!
Aloha!
