Wyatt, If you are going to go with carpet make sure that you really check out the backing materials and the padding. There are materials that harbor mold & moisture & dirt and ones that are more resistant. In our last mainland house, we had hardwood on the main floors, but there was carpeting in the walk out basement studio....it was a thick plush with a foam chip padding, and was yuck...when we were looking to replace it we were lucky to have very good advise, in an area that may have moisture, get the most closed cell pad you can, tight fiber pile, not cut loop, with a good moisture resistant backing & adhesive...
That said, I would not carpet again unless the carpeted areas had very limited & very clean traffic.
