Helicopters are a nuisance, plain and simple. Wherever I am, whether it be on my property waaaay out in the country or down in the high desert near 29 Palms--helicopters are a huge disturbance. In the desert they rattle the windows.
I think that trying to move flight patterns in order to avoid houses is only putting a band aid on the problem. You are most likely going to fly over somebody's house...usually someone who chose to live rurally for the peace and quiet, like me. Someone who works at home and can't escape you: the old, the sick, the young, the sleeping, the just plain cranky.
So we solve this issue for all the human inhabitants of the area. What about the animals? They are disturbed by these nuisances as well--perhaps more than we are. I read Thunderfoot's post that said his horses nearly trampled him one day. I'm sure that whales and marine animals are also bothered and affected in ways that may be extremely harmful.
Let's consider global warming in the equation. Is it really necessary for you to fly over the top of a volcano just because you can afford to do it?
I fear there is no viable solution that will ameliorate the harm done to others of ever-increasing helicopter traffic anywhere. It impacts the freedom of the majority while providing benefit to a very few.
