I had some fairly big Albezia's cut down a few months ago. These trees could easily have taken out a neighbors house if they came down improperly so I expected the job to be expensive. I got quotes from several tree trimming firms and eventually settled on Big Island Tree Service in Papaikou (326-1222 in Puna). The cost to me was in the mid 4 figures. Contact me directly if you want more exact # and I have photographs of the trees.
One piece of advise is to check with the state Professional and Vocational Licensing web site here: http://pvl.ehawaii.gov/pvlsearch/app
It will tell you whether you are dealing with a licensed contractor and their status with liability and workman's compensation insurance. I am not a lawyer but I would be concerned about being in the line of fire if you use an unlicensed company/individual and a tree he was cutting down fell on a neighbor's house.
Anybody with common sense can take down a tree in a open field. It takes real experts with the right equipment in close quarters and it will be reflected in the cost.
