Although we have had a few borers, a bigger problem with squash for us here in Central HPP (el. 250-300 ft.) is disease, both fungal and viral. Our zucchini and yellow squashes have both been subject to a fungal "melt" and what we presume is a virus that makes the leaves blanche and then die. The most disease resistant and productive squash we have found is a Japanese variety (starts with a 'K', but can't remember the name) that makes very long vines and very big fruit. They sell it at Garden Exchange in Hilo.
