I know the victim on the motorbike. He's hospitalized on Oahu and his family's there with him. He has a traumatically amputated left leg, a shattered right leg, pelvis, and head injuries. He has survived, but I can't even imagine how this will effect him and his family.
Here's my understanding of what happened;
An SUV was making a dangerous multiple pass, and when they determined they weren't going to make it they avoided serious damage to themself by pulling back and running over my friend on his motorbike.
I don't know if the SUV driver was impared or not, but his/her actions stink of vehicular manslaughter. That's why I'm interested in any news accounts, or if any charges have been filed.
This is exactly why there needs to be not only a light at that intersection, but also an officer on duty at that intersection to enforce it for several months.
I cannot say that I'm relieved to know that the guy on the bike survived. I don't know that it is a good thing to have to live your life horribly disfigured after such a traumatic encounter. And I feel a little selfish for being relieved that it isn't a person who it close to me.
All I can do is pray that the driver of the SUV no longer gets to have a license and that they will learn a valuable lesson in being considerate that their actions ultimately affect other people.
I HATE SUV's.... People who drive them should be required to have extra driver's training, as it seems that these are always the people that do the most damage when they are not paying attention, which is a lot of the time.
