I can't imagine it would be a good idea.
As one of the people who could easily hit a bicyclist in the rain, I wish bicyclists wouldn't take on major roads without bike lanes. I mean, it's a nice idea to safe gas and get exercise, but cars on highways, rain, and bicyclists don't mix.
I have to be honest and say the bicyclists who put themselves into this mix kind of make me mad. I have enough to do looking out for the cars. That may sound selfish, but I'm just being honest.
There are houses for sale in Hilo ... if you want to save on fuel, and there is a bus.
It's your life and your choice, but I think the "live in Puna, commute to Hilo" mentality is not a good one and is creating lots of problems -- treating Puna as a bedroom community. And yes, bicycling creates more problems for people who need to use the roads than cars do, because of the accident potential.
Best of luck though in figuring out what's going to work.
