I'm not sure which park maps you are looking at that are too small, but the park site as a good summit map: http://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/up...summit.pdf
The explosion occurred near the base of Halema'uma'u crater (see map), below the overlook platform, with debris falling within the crater as well as at the overlook, parking lot and Crater Rim Drive (the circle road you referred to). USGS as good pictures: http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/images.html
Sounds like you were taking pictures of the tropic birds that nest in Halema'uma'u. You may have been in the Halema'uma'u parking lot or at the pullover labeled Southwest Rift (which has a big crack).
Chain of Craters Road (the road to the coast) is open. Crater Rim Drive is closed between the military camp (which is between Steam Vents and Kilauea Overlook) and Chain of Craters Road. Jaggar Museum is closed.
