When your houseplants aren't doing so well inside, put them outside until they perk up and then rotate them back inside. I do that with orchids. When they bloom I bring them inside and when they stop blooming the go back out into the yard until they flower again.
About the only true "houseplants" we have are African violets, the rest of them spend time in the yard.
