Like many "paranormal" phenomena, or superstition-based pseudo-science, dowsing for water (or lava tubes) doesn't bear up under scientific scrutiny. Here is a paper which analyzed the most comprehensive dowsing experiments, performed in Munich in the late 1990's. According to the paper's author, "The experiments thus can and should be considered a decisive failure by the dowsers."

Seismic detectors (echo-geology), ground-penetrating radar, and bunnies are all proven technologies for detecting holes in the ground.[8D]
