Has anyone successfully grown spinach?

Very encouraging to know that spinach can grow here in Puna. Larry, do you sow the seeds directly on the soil or do you start them indoors?

I went to the Farmers Coop and Ohana Greenhouse yesterday and got different tips (1) sowing in rolled up damp paper towel in ziploc indoors and (2) using the tray/dome/plugs under flourescent (sp?) light.

Thank you all for the tips & input, will try them and let you know the results.
