I used to collect those old soda bottles. My friends and I used to go digging for them. We used to look for dump sites next to old plantation camps. We also used to dig right at Keaau transfer station. This place has been used as a dump for at least a 100 years. Between the station and the humane society, we found lots of old bottles buried. But most of them were worthless brown Clorox bottles. This was like 20 years ago so I think it must be cleaned out by now.
It seems that every little town or village had it's own soda works a long time ago. Many of them were run by Japanese immigrants. I have few T and S Ikeda bottles. I'm looking at one that says "Pacific Soda Works Hilo Hawaii" right now. I've seen some from Kilauea, Honookaa and other parts of the island. I suppose the cost of transportation back them made this profitable.
