Bruce Lee would get his ass handed to him today. He'd go home, and get better and return. At the competitive level today, even locally, the talent level is very very high, and more importantly, the athletes are trained at a much much higher level. It's athleticism in general that has transformed the sport. Unfortunately, on the TV you get to see very little of that, as they want short rounds, knockouts, and all that.
No gloves, no rounds. That's the best test of skill, and probably safest for the fighters.
Thinking about putting together a training club up here in Glenwood for the old guys. I've done a fair bit of BJJ, Sambo, and classical Jiu-Jitsu. I teach a little on occasion, but don't really feel qualified--but that doesn't seem to stop anyone else. Getting pretty old for rolling around on the mat with the young guys, but if they're smart and everyone plays safe it's a very good time and keeps you fit and in the game.
A 40 year old guy can spar and dominate an average 20 year old guy if he wants to. A 60 year old guy could. It just takes 500 sit-ups a day. 500 squats. Minimum. If you do that, you're going to need very little technique.
As for BJ Penn. Good F'ing Job. That isn't easy.
