Though I moved to Hawaii with 2 dogs and 2 cats, I am currently (and sadly) without. One of the reasons I can't wait to move to the Big Island when we retire is that my husband has promised me I can get a dog as a housewarming present, but he has to pick it out. Why? My history of picking out dogs that are not quite "all there":
Libby, a lab mix (110 pounds!) was an impulse acquisition from a "free puppies" box in front of a walmart. I had her in college, and at one point the white tip on her tail was dyed pink to match my hair [
] but she was never the brightest, and when she was full grown, was diagnosed by the vet as being mentally disabled.
Then there was Topo, another lab mix- I got him when I got out of the army from the pound. In Cheyenne, they let you take prospective adoptees out in a yard to play. He was so excited, he kept running in circles, and won my heart. It turns out he ran in circles because he had been abused and had a brain injury that affected his motor skills. Both dogs dumber than a box of rocks, but great companions. I still miss them.
