The myna birds in our neighborhood seem to like the snails once they have been tenderized under tires (this also probably infuses the calcium rich shell throughout the meat ;~) Only know this because we catch the snails in our yard & release them at on the road.... mynas start snacking after a few hours of tenderization & hot asphalt cooking...
As for the kids going off to college.... UH-H has some pretty good programs, mostly small, private institution sized classes & exceptional resident tuition... if this is any draw... (plus a new pharmacology program & a brand spanking new - not yet open - student center...) & Hilo is more of a sleepy college town...
The mention of tropical diseases reminds me of friends who were med students at Cook Cty Hospital in Chicago... though no where near a tropical local, because of the diversity in the city, they would get to study some very interesting tropical cases...
