Damn, just cuz I don't peg the post o' meter daily doesn't make me a phantom! [8D]
'Aight. Obscure, odd-ball, underappreciated, DJ boycotted, payola less tunes & artists. Mostly from the '60s & '70s since I'm old, slow, deaf & fat. Just like the music. [:p]
A couple of my favorites have already been mentioned in this thread, but I'll give 'em my props anyway starting with J.D. Souther in Rob's original post: White Rhythm and Blues; and Leo Kottke, one of the world's preeminent acoustic guitarists: Chewing Pine. Great stuff.
When I moved to Oahu almost 40 years ago, the main rock radio station - KKUA, 'Heavy in Hawaii' - obviously had very little in the way of playlist budget since they played 2 particular songs TO DEATH. AFAIK neither one got much if any air time elsewhere . . . except maybe off-Strip Vegas lounges. New Zealander Tom Jones wannbe John Rowles with Cheryl Moana Marie, and the otherwise solid Rascals with the lame azzed My Hawaii. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that there's a YouTube of Rowles performing his 'hit' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCxWdVJTlpY .
Others:
Gerry Rafferty. Stealin' Time
Ivory Joe Hunter. Since I Met You Baby
Bobby Fuller Four. I Fought the Law (Fuller sure fought somebody; he was murdered in 1966)
Hank Ballard. Had The Twist thieved from him by the talentless former chicken plucker Chubby Checker.
Pneumatic 'B' actress Joey Heatherton. Gone. Chick picked the wrong career. She's got serious pipes.
Keith Hampshire. The First Cut is the Deepest. Written by Cat Stevens, recorded by many, charted by Rod Stewart; my favorite version belongs to this Canadian unknown.
Joe South. Any and all.
Jerry Jeff Walker Likewise.
Junior Brown I used to noodle around with guitar, so I'm a fan of pickers. I GUESS that thing JB plays is a guitar but I'm not putting any money down. Sounds incredible though.
The Chieftains The Bard of Armagh/The Streets of Laredo (with Vince Gill)
Clarence Carter. Slip Away
Checkmates, Ltd.. Black Pearl
Emmylou Harris. One of These Days
Vanessa Williams (defrocked Miss America). Oh How the Years Go By
Winstons. Love of the Common People
Jimmy Buffett. Living and Dying in 3/4 Time
Rita Coolidge. My Crew
Bonnie Raitt. I'm Blowin' Away
John Prine. Barbara Lewis
Kris Kristofferson. The Silver Tongued Devil and I in particular, but really the WHOLE FREAKIN' CATALOG.
</post> & back to lurk mode [

aloha,
Gene
