Esnap has a point, imagine a big bag of fresh, dripping manoa lettuce or mixed package meat on a long hot drive home in paper bags. Plastic was used because it's waterproof, and a replacment doesn't exist. reducing the use to wet items would cover both sides.
The lettuce wouldn't be a problem, because it would be wrapped in the plastic bag that can be found in every produce department.
The meat also would be contained in styrofoam and plastic wrapping.
Oh wait... are these going to be banned too?
I recall the days at the meat market (not that long ago) when fresh meat was wrapped in paper, and I can't see any problem with the lettuce if you shake it off a bit before you put it in a bag.
