My first knowledge of Angel was in the early 1980’s. I recall him heading a summer program for teenagers I participated in. The program involved agricultural, farming and working of the land. I was one of these teenagers building and revitalizing ancient kalo, loi fields, and awai’s in the mountains and our lunches were free like school lunches. It was rewarding seeing overgrowth forests become fruit/vegetable producing land once again after hundreds of years. What was significant at the time is I recall one of the teenage participants saying that this program kept him out of trouble that summer because of the fact that his friends not in the program, hanging on the beach, did get in to trouble with the law at that time. I agreed thinking I probably would’ve gotten into trouble as well. It’s funny that while Angel was already cultivating the youth of our community trying to guide them in the right direction some of our Mayoral candidate were still in grade school.
Then I noticed Angel in the early 1990’s and still he was spearheading programs for the youth in our community. I wasn’t involved but recall one program was about Hawaiian culture, history and the Hokulea and Mauloa? canoes. That’s why I’m surprised that the recent poll showed many of our young adults leaning towards another candidate who had no true impact in their wellbeing besides “doing concerts”.
After this we all saw Angel fight for our shore-line access. Other wise only tourist would have had access to the few shore-lines us locals can now enjoy. And he did this at no personal “profit”! It wasn’t as if he was offered compensation to fight for our community against special interest!
This man has already done a “LIFE TIME” of community service for social and environmental justice. I would be HONORED to have this man lead us into the very fragile future that we are upon. With this man we are in good hands. He has my vote.
