Thank you YurtGirl, that was well expressed why contractors may not be the right choice for every job. Is it the right way to go when building a home? Unless the owner-builder is a contractor or very experienced, I think so. But this was a small kine job.
Look, it's not my intention to ruin this guy's business, only to warn about the way he can potentially behave. I had no problem with the "clearing" part of his job and if that had been the whole job there may not have been a problem, I'll never know.
My other message is a reminder, to myself and others, to get the thing down in writing. I have a record of the monetary terms, but the exact scope of the job wasn't written out, which is due to my own style of not liking to seem "untrusting." Mistake.
As a side note, I have been through plenty of these small jobs since I moved here and treating them informally has only backfired on me this one time, and at the time I first talked to Troy, zero times.
