I, too, had a beagle/corgi mix named Henry. He came scratching at my back door one night in the middle of a rain storm. I let him in, thinking I would seek out his owners the next day. But he had no collar and was sooo timid. When I swept the floor or made a loud noise he’d cower and shiver as if he’d been abused. I asked around the neighborhood and no one recognized him, so he became part of our family. It took awhile for his fear to leave, but he eventually began to trust us.
He got along great with our golden lab Pharlap, our cats, and with our infant son. For some reason he especially liked me and would eagerly follow me around wherever I went. He’d curl up at my feet when I sat on the couch and at the foot of my bed when I slept. He was a trusted companion and quite protective of our family until his death by heart attack when he was, by our best guess, around 17.
It sounds like Gumbo was just as sweet as Henry. I feel your loss, and wish you the best.
