quote:You need to start at first light. You also need to realize that it is a high altitude climb, and pace yourself accordingly. The path is essentially nonexistent in places, it's over both smooth and very rough, sharp lava. The path is often on unstable, loose, and very sharp rock. Bring a wide brimmed hat, sun block, dry clothes in a water proof bag, warm clothes, rain poncho, food and water. Emergency supplies should include a first aid kit, emergency blankets, good flashlights, mirror, fully charged cell phone, etc. Don't forget your camera. If, in white out conditions, don't lose sight of the marker behind you before you sight the one in front. Remember, at that altitude when the sun sets the temp drops real fast. Having said all of that, I highly recommend it. I hope my bad knee will let me do it a few more times. I would love to do the longer hike from the bird park side, but I question the ability of my knee and back to haul the necessary gear for that multi-day hike. Maybe I can get a temporary medical marijuana certificate for the hike[8D] That way maybe my back and knee could stand the pain, but then I would probably get lost[xx(]
