Something to learn ... analogies to other states that did not get their names from indigenous sovereign peoples do not apply.
No one here is a Hawaiian because of residency. Hawaiian properly means one thing in Hawai'i, and that is Native Hawaiian or part blood thereof.
In general, if you are Caucasian you are not "local" even if you were born and raised, although if you have 100% local accent and speak primarily pidgin you're in a gray area and might be a local.
If you are a haole, you are a resident -- a malihini or a kama'aina (if you assimilate well).
I would never refer to myself as a Hawaiian. I'm a Hawai'i voter.
If you disagree, imagine being here for the next census. I guarantee if you are not of Native Hawaiian ancestry you are not checking the Hawaiian box on the census.
